McKay is done with his summer math class!

I am not sure if you remember but a few months ago I told here on the blog that McKay had chosen to take a higher level math class for 7 weeks/21 days of 6 hours over the summer. I was very surprised that he himself wanted to do it but thought okay we will see how it goes.

Here is a little description of the course:

Summer Mathematics Courses Sponsored by Davis District USTAR Program

This is an intensive program of study for students seeking an innovative and exciting experience in math. Careful consideration should be given to students motivation and willingness to engage in the rigor and pacing that will be part of the summer course. Teachers have been selected for their enthusiasm and excellence. Students will engage in a variety of field experiences that will move them from the traditional classroom toward new visions of mathematics.

•    Earn 1 year of original math credit in 7 weeks instead of 1 school year.
•    Accelerate coursework for honors or scholarship opportunities

He went with a friend from school named Josh and they had a little thing going. There were 63 quizzes and 7 end of level tests and they decided to see who would get the highest score on those 7 tests.

Well the last day it was even 3-3. So the tie breaker was the BIG Final test. On Part 1 they both got the same score 91/98 and on Part 2 of the test Josh got 75/80. What do you think McKay got... Did he beat Josh?....... McKay got 79/80 :o) so he got 4 out of the 7 tests best score. It was good to see McKay get a little "push-back" and have to work harder and not just get it all easy as always.

Many times the teachers used McKay's score to make the grading curve because he had the highest score in the class. And what do you think he ended with in grade ? Yep he got an A = 12.

Next week we will change his classes at the High School and he will take a higher level math because of this summer course so it was for sure worth it to have him go. I am so proud of him. He worked hard and made up a whole year of Math in just 21 days. Way to go McKay.

He told me he would do it, get an A that is and he did ;o)
